Simple Stories in Words of One Syllable for Little Boys and Girls, the fourth and final collection of children’s fiction by Margaret King Moore, Lady Mount Cashell (1772-1835), was published in London in 1824 by J. Harris and Son. This firm had taken over the children’s book business established in 1744 by John Newbery (1713 - 1767) on the retirement of the founder’s widow (c.1801 or 1802). Announced as the work of “the author of ‘Stories of Old Daniel’”, Simple Stories was described on the title page as a “New Edition”, suggesting that it was a revision of Stories for Little Boys and Girls in Words of One Syllable, which had appeared under the imprint of Godwin’s Juvenile Library …
