Anne Markey

Anne Markey is a Literature Tutor with the Open Education Unit of Dublin City University. She previously worked as an Adjunct Lecturer in the School of English, Trinity College Dublin and as a Teaching Fellow in Maynooth Univeristy.

Her research focuses on Irish writing in English, particularly on the links between Gaelic culture and traditions on Anglophone writing; on children’s literature of the long eighteenth century; and on the literary representation of childhood. Competitive awards from several international bodies, including the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, the Royal Irish Academy, and the Literary Encyclopedia, have enabled her to develop and pursue these research interests by consulting special collections and archives in the UK, Canada, and the USA.

Dr Markey’s publications include Patrick Pearse: Short Stories (2009), Oscar Wilde’s Fairy Tales: Origins and Contexts (2011), and Children’s Fiction, 1765-1808 (2011). She was co-editor of new critical editions of two early Irish novels - the anonymously authored Vertue Rewarded (2010) and Sarah Butler, Irish Tales (2010) – and of the collection Folklore and Modern Irish Writing (2014). In addition, she has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and collections on topics including Irish gothic, childhood in the early Irish novel, and the Irish fin-de-siècle.

As Co-Editor for Irish Writing in English for the Literary Encyclopedia, Dr Markey welcomes proposals for contributions from both established and young scholars in the field.
