Accessing The Literary Encyclopedia
The Literary Encyclopedia offers a range of options, depending on your research needs, location and institutional affiliation.
Institutional subscribers
(students and staff in subscribing institutions; also alumni of these institutions)
On-campus access: Your institution provides direct access to The Literary Encyclopedia on-campus. There is no need to log in – just go to our homepage and browse or search for content.
Off-campus/ Remote access: If you are off-campus, your institution will offer various ways of accessing remotely the electronic resources to which it subscribes. Each institution has its own procedures, which the library helpdesk can assist you with if you have difficulty accessing these resources while you are away (information is usually provided in a ‘remote access’ page on the institutions’ library or information centre website).
The Literary Encyclopedia also offers the possibility to log in via a subscribing institution. If you are a member of one of our subscribing institutions, you can choose it from the list and you will be re-directed to your institution’s remote access authentication pages. Whenever you return to the Encyclopedia, it will have remembered your choice of institutions, so you can click through it and follow the usual authentication procedure.
Personal User Account access: in addition to the ways of accessing the LE described above, users at subscribing institutions can also create a free personal account on our site, which gives them access to various additional features only available to logged in personal users, such as the ability to create and save bookshelves, save simple and advanced searches, save user-generated timelines, save downloaded pdf versions of articles.
You can register for a Personal User Account here, then use this to log in instead of using the institutional remote access option. When you fill in the form, please use your institutional email address in order to be recognised as a member of a subscribing institution and be allowed free access. Once you have filled in the form, you should check your institutional email and click on the authentication link sent by the LE.
Please note that if you use a personal email address (gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc.) when you register, you will not be recognized as a member of a subscribing institution and will be asked to pay for a subscription.
Individual subscribers
If you are a private individual not affiliated to any of our subscribing institutions, you will have to purchase a monthly or annual subscription to access our content. Our rates are kept deliberately low in order to encourage and facilitate individual research. See HERE for more information.
Free access to the LE
If you are a user teaching or studying at a school or higher education institution in a country where the GDP is below the world average (for an up-to-date table, see HERE, please contact your school library and advise them to get in touch with us.
