Margaret King, the second child and eldest daughter of Robert, Earl of Kingsborough, and his wife, Caroline, née Fitzgerald, was born in Henrietta Street, Dublin on 24 October 1772 (McAleer: 19). Her parents’ marriage was a strategic one, designed to unite the fortunes and lands of two powerful Anglo-Irish families, and the relationship between the earl and his wife was always fraught, eventually ending in the late 1790s in estrangement and separation (Todd, 2003a: 126). Shortly after Margaret’s birth, the King family removed to London, from where Lord and Lady Kingsborough set off on a tour of the continent in 1773, leaving behind Margaret and her brother in the care of a nurse and household servants. In later life she recalled:
