Stories of Old Daniel: or Tales of Wonder and Delight, “printed for the proprietors of the Juvenile Library”, was published in London bearing the date 1808. The publisher was William Godwin, who ran the Juvenile Library with his second wife, Mary Jane, and whose diary entry for 30 December 1807 records “Old Daniel published”. The author was the exiled Irish aristocrat, Margaret King Moore, the Countess of Mount Cashell. Both author and publisher had good reasons for not wanting their names to be immediately associated in the public mind with this collection of children’s stories.
