Published anonymously but announced on the title page as the work of the author of Stories of Old Daniel and printed in London for the firm of M.J. Godwin and Co. in 1822, Stories for Little Boys and Girls in Words of One Syllable was the third collection of children’s fiction by Margaret King Moore, the Countess of Mount Cashell. Unlike its predecessors, Stories of Old Daniel (1808) and Continuation of the Stories of Old Daniel (1820), in which an old soldier recounts his adventures abroad to a group of boys, the stories in the present volume generally unfold within domestic settings and feature young protagonists of both sexes.
