The Museum: Or, The Literary and Historical Register (29 March 1746 – 12 September 1747) was the second venture into the world of periodical publication by the entrepreneurial author and bookseller, Robert Dodsley (1703-64). Ostensibly it offered a similar format to his short-lived The Publick Register: Or, The Weekly Magazine, which ran five years earlier, from January to May 1741, appearing fortnightly rather than weekly. Like The Publick Register, The Museum offered a miscellany of essays, poetry, book reviews and contemporary politics, but did so at two and a half times the length, thereby allowing for articles and reviews of fuller consideration and development.
