The first part of Nobel Prize laureate Elias Canetti’s autobiography, Die gerettete Zunge. Geschichte einer Jugend [The Tongue Set Free. Remembrance of a European Childhood, 1977] and the sequels, Die Fackel im Ohr [The Torch in My Ear, 1980] and Das Augenspiel [The Play of the Eyes, 1985], must be read within the context of other memoirs by European Jews born at the fin-de-siècle.
