The essay-periodical the Spectator appeared in two separate series. The first series was published daily except Sundays from 1 March 1711 until 6 December 1712, making a total of 555 issues. It was edited by Richard Steele and published in London by Samuel Buckley and Jacob Tonson. The second series, edited by Joseph Addison, Eustace Budgell and Thomas Tickell, and numbered 556–635, was published in London by Buckley and Tonson three times a week from 18 June to 20 December 1714.
