Pope's An Epistle To The Right Honourable Richard Earl of Burlington was first published on 14 December 1731. It was occasioned by Burlington's publication, in the previous year, of Palladio's Designs of the Baths, Arches, Theatres etc. of Ancient Rome. The second edition of Pope's poem, published on 4 January 1732, added the half title Of False Taste. An Epistle [etc.]. Pope continued revising the poem to improve its overall argument and structure, first for the publication of his collected Works, Vol. II, 23 April 1735, and then again for the “death-bed” edition of, Epistles to Several Persons, privately distributed in May 1744 a few weeks before he died, but then suppressed after his death.
