Gérard Étienne was born in Haiti, in Cap Haitien in 1936, and he passed away in 2008 in Montreal, Canada. From the beginning of his life, he witnessed paternal violence against his mother because she was not a voodooist like her husband. Gérard Étienne’s first revolt was against his irrational and violent father. This was followed by his heroic stand against the successive dictatorships that marked the fragile destiny of Haiti. He was then arrested and tortured under the rule of Paul Magloire (1950-1956) and again later during Papa Doc Duvalier’s rule (1957-1971). That was Gérard Étienne’s bitter start of adulthood.
