Gérard Vergniaud Étienne (1936-2008) is a Haitian and Canadian writer, who was most active in the literary field in Quebec. He is the author of some 30 works of literature, some of which have been translated into different languages. Poet, essayist, novelist, linguist, fighting journalist, critic and playwright, he also pursued a brilliant academic career. He started his university studies with a BA in Language and Literature (licence ès lettres) at Montreal University in 1964 and completed them with a PhD in Linguistics at Strasbourg University in 1974.
