In December 1755, the Monthly Review announced the publication of The History of Charlotte Villars, noting that there was very little to admire in this narrative whose subtitle proclaimed it to be “founded on truth” (Anon. 1755, 510). The full title of the novel was The History of Charlotte Villars, A Narrative Founded on Truth, Interspersed with Variety of Incidents Instructive and Entertaining. The printers were identified on the title page as S. Crowder and H. Woodgate at the Golden Ball in Paternoster Row and the date of publication was given as 1756. That same year, an Irish edition of the novel was printed by Henry Saunders at the corner of Christchurch Lane in High Street in Dublin. …
