The life and career of major German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) have long been admired for the variety and greatness of his accomplishments. In addition to other professional and scientific roles, he produced literary works of merit in virtually every European genre. Also remarkable is the fact that he interacted with other writers and thinkers and produced sophisticated literary works at a young age, including fine poems and his world-famous novella, Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (1774; The Sorrows of Young Werther, 1779).
