Nad Niemnem [On the Niemen, 1888] is the best known and most studied novel by Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841–1910). It originally appeared in instalments in the Warsaw weekly Tygodnik Ilustrowany in 1887, and was published as a book by Gebethner and Wolff the following year. Considered representative of Orzeszkowa’s deepest concerns and values, the culmination of her writing career, it is not, however, necessarily typical of her œuvre taken as a whole.
