Eliza Orzeszkowa (pen names E.O., Gabriela Litwinka, Li...ka) is a significant Polish novelist of the nineteenth century. She was born on the 6^th of June 1841 in Milkowszczyzna near Grodno (today's Belarus). Her father Benedykt Pawłowski and her sister Klementyna died when she was very young, her mother remarried, and Orzeszkowa was raised and influenced by her maternal grandmother Elżbieta Kamienska. Between 1852–57 Eliza was a student at a boarding school maintained by nuns of the Order of the Blessed Sacrament in Warsaw. There she met and befriended Maria Konopnicka, another future Positivist writer and poet. Eliza married Piotr Orzeszko at age 17, and subsequently moved to her husband's estate in Ludwinowo in the …
