L’Énigme du retour is a novel by Haitian-Canadian author Dany Laferrière. It was published in 2009 by Éditions Boréal in Montreal and Éditions Grasset in France. The novel won several awards, including the Médicis Prize awarded for the first time to a Haitian writer and for the second time to a Quebec writer (Marie-Claire Blais had received it in 1966 for her novel Une saison dans la vie d’Emmanuel). The recognition of Laferrière’s writing talent went beyond the borders of French literature and the Francophonie.
