Comment faire l’amour avec un Nègre sans se fatiguer, published in 1985 by VLB Éditeur, is the first novel by Dany Laferrière and is considered a significant work in Quebec’s contemporary literature. Besides translations to different languages that have had a lot of success – including David Homel’s English translation How to Make Love to a Negro in 1987 – the novel was turned into a movie directed by Jacques W. Benoit in 1989. The book was published a few years after Laferrière’s arrival in Montreal. Reportedly, the writer had to leave Haiti fearing for his life because of his journalistic activities, including his collaboration at Le Petit Samedi Soir, which displeased the political regime in power …
