Published six years after La scoperta di Milano (1942), Lo Zibaldino, subtitled Storie assortite vecchie e nuove [Various Old and New Stories], represents Guareschi’s second collection of family-oriented tales. This one is comprised of accounts that he had previously published in different newspapers over a ten-year period spanning 1938 to 1948. Never specifically presented as a sequel to La scoperta, the anthology nonetheless covers several years of fictionalized family life during the dopoguerra [post-war period] that revolve around his wife Margherita (Ennia), young son Albertino, and daughter La Pasionaria (Carlotta), who was born in 1943 when Guareschi was a POW in Poland.
