In November 1947 Giovannino Guareschi published the album Italia provvisoria [Provisional Italy] to document Italy’s tumultuous two-year post-World War II reconstruction period (the dopoguerra). Its literary presentation and style is informal — that of a scrapbook with witty short stories, photostatic reproductions of newspaper headlines, and photograph collages. Guareschi wanted the book to remind future generations about what took place in Italian society as the country came to grips with the material wounds of the war, its Fascist past, and a potential Communist seizure of power:
