Published during World War II, Il marito in collegio [A Husband in Boarding School] is Giovannino Guareschi’s third collection of serialized fiction, and it sold well in a wartime market because, in part, many Italians had come to know of his comical strengths both through his two earlier novels — La scoperta di Milano [The Discovery of Milan] and Il destino si chiama Coltilde [Duncan and Clotilda] — and his editorship of the humorous weekly Bertoldo.
