Already a respected author with eight previous novels to his credit, New Zealander Lloyd Jones found himself catapulted into international literary success with the publication of Mister Pip in 2006. He thus came to experience first-hand the global reach of literature that is a central theme of his own novel. Mister Pip is narrated from the perspective of a Melanesian girl, Matilda, who encounters Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations under conditions of extraordinary hardship.
