The play IchundIch. Eine theatralische Tragödie in sechs Akten, einem Vor- und einem Nachspiel [I and I. A Theatrical Tragedy in Six Acts, a Prelude and an Epilogue], written between 1937 and 1941, reflects a traumatic period in the life of the Jewish writer Else Lasker-Schüler. She had been forced into exile by the Hitler government, one of many involved in the mass exodus of Jewish and dissident artists. Lasker-Schüler emigrated to Switzerland at first and went from there to Palestine. She lived in Jerusalem until her death.
