Else Lasker-Schüler is one of the most outstanding German-language poets and writers of the twentieth century, who also excelled as a graphic artist. Her unconventionality flabbergasted people of different ranks; whereas the general public was shocked by her spectacular appearance when she roamed German streets in Oriental garb, literary critics often failed to appreciate the creativity of her stylistic choices. Lasker-Schüler's life and work reflect central developments of her time: through her art, she articulated her experience as a Jew in German culture; as a woman she stood at a historical moment when women entered the public sphere; and as a modern individual she encountered a rapidly changing world.
