Queen Anne's reign represented a short-lived return to Stuart rule in Britain, and a transitional period between the rule of the House of Orange and that of the House of Hanover. This was because she succeeded her heirless brother-in-law King William III in 1702, but died childless herself in 1714, after it had been decreed that the throne would go to the Elector of Hanover (later King George I) if Anne died without issue.
