The Game Association was founded by major landowners to initiate proceedings in the Court of King's Bench against poachers. As opposed to the more normal route for prosecuting poachers – which was to lay information before a justice of the peace --such an action imposed on the defendant legal costs of fifty to eighty pounds. The very threat of prosecution by the Game Association was therefore a considerable deterrent, especially for men of property but no legal right to take game. The Game Association also offered informants a reward of £5, a very considerable sum, for information leading to a successful prosecution, in addition to the customary half share in any fine awarded.
