The Game Act of 1671 had been silent on the matter of penalties, which were assumed to continue from previous legislation at a rate of 20s per head of game killed or three month's imprisonment. In 1711 this was amended to secure a blanket fine of £5 or three month's imprisonment for possessing killed game, a snare or a hunting dog. The ‘deer-stealer' remained covered by previous legislation and liable to a £30 fine or a year's imprisonment.
