Queen Mary II dies, leaving her husband William III as the sole monarch. Although he had originally gained legitimacy for occupation of the British throne through his marriage to Mary Stuart, James II's sister, now he holds it solely through the Acts passed by the English and Scottish Parliaments after seizing power in 1688.
