John, Lord Carteret, a supporter of Stanhope and rival to Robert Walpole and Charles Townshend, is dismissed from his position, over a dispute concerning Walpole's French alliance. He is succeeded as Secretary of State, Southern Department, by the Duke of Newcastle, Thomas Pelham-Holles, whose brother, Henry Pelham, becomes Secretary of State for War.
