[Preliminary entry.] The ironbridge at Ironbridge in Shropshire
was the first major construction in cast iron in the world. The
bridge was built over the river Severn in Shropshire by Abraham
Darby III, grandson of the man who did so much to improve the
production of cast iron and who founded the famous Coalbrookdale
foundry. The bridge proved beyond doubt that large constructions
could be made of iron and was thus the forerunner of such later
works as the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
