The full title of what is often known as “the Bill of Rights” is “An Act Declaring the Rights and Liberties of the Subject and Settling the Succession of the Crown”.
The act sought to resolve the relation of British monarchs and their subjects which had been contested from the outbreak of the civil war in (1642-51) and on through the Restoration of the monarchy (1660-1688) It incorporated the Declaration of Rights (13 February 1689) which, consequent on ‘the Glorious Revolution’, set out the conditions under which William and Mary had been offered the crown.
