In 1962, a remarkable young man with “large, expressive eyes” and sharp intellect enrolled in the Bengali Department of the University of Dhaka but left within a few years without a degree (Zafar 25-26). Apparently, Professor Ahmed Sharif, a legendary scholar and intellectual, had scolded him, and the protégé was so deeply offended by his favourite professor’s remarks that he decided to quit (Hasin 470). Three years later, he went to Brahmanbaria – then a part of the district of Comilla – and resumed his formal education at Brahmanbaria College, where his friend and mentor Asad Chowdhury, a renowned poet, was teaching.
