Abul Hasan was a journalist and a major Bangladeshi poet of the 1960s. He wrote romantic, ruminative, and melancholic poetry of great beauty, for which he is often compared with John Keats. He also wrote a couple of plays and some short stories, but all are affected by his poetic preoccupations. His poetry is by and large full of youthful sentiment – sorrow, anger, and musings about political anarchy; social injustice; the human predicament; alienation and loneliness; the lost past and nostalgia; and queries about the self. But the rage in his works is subdued into poetic grace and serenity.
