Abdellah Taïa, born in Rabat in 1973, is a Moroccan writer and filmmaker who has lived in Paris for most of the present century. Taïa is the second Moroccan writer, after Rachid O. (born in 1970 in Marrakech), to write about his homosexuality autobiographically, and the first Arab writer to assume it publicly without the benefit of anonymity. Taïa’s parents, Mohamed and M’Barka, from the rural Moroccan town of Ouled Brahim, where they met and married, feature prominently in his work. M’Barka’s marriage to Mohammed were her second nuptials, after her initial tragic marriage to a Moroccan soldier who died fighting for the French in Indochina.
