Samuel Whitbread (1), was born at Cardington near Bedford on 20th August, 1720, and at fourteen was sent to London to be an apprentice at a brewery. Diligent and entrepreneurial, he became a master of his profession and at the age of 22 Whitbread formed a partnership with Thomas Shewell with whom he ran two small breweries, one making pale ale and the other producing a dark porter which was both economical and very popular. Whitbread was in the right place at the right time, for brewing in the expanding cities was ready to move from cottage industry to mass-production, taking advantage of economies of scale and new technology.
