Poet and essayist, a leading figure of European literary modernism, Portugal's most important literary personality of the 20th century, Fernando Pessoa was named by critic Harold Bloom in The Western Canon (1994) as one of the 26 fundamental authors of the Western tradition. His statue sits on a bench outside Lisbon's famed coffeehouse Brasileira, wearing the glasses, hat, bow tie, and dark suit similar to the figure captured in a rare photograph while crossing a square in the city he almost never left.
