Catharine Trotter (?1674-1749) was a dramatist and metaphysician. She was born in London on 16 August ?1674, the younger daughter of Captain David Trotter and his wife Sarah, née Ballenden, who were both Scottish. Captain Trotter served in the navy during the reign of King Charles II but died in 1684 at Scanderoon, leaving his widow and children destitute, despite Sarah Ballenden's familial connections to powerful Scottish aristocrats, the Bellendens and the Earls of Perth and Lauderdale. Their financial predicament was slightly alleviated by a pension granted by Charles II. This unfortunately lapsed on the death of that monarch and was not renewed until Queen Anne succeeded to the throne in 1702.
