In the course of her long life, Sally Wood became one of the three most prolific novelists in the early American republic, producing four novels, a book of two novellas, a hymnal, and one known unpublished manuscript tale. She was born into a prominent shipping family as Sally Sayward Barrell on October 1, 1759, in what later became Maine. At the time of her birth, her father was away serving the colonial cause in the Seven Years War, and she was born at the York home of her prominent grandfather, Judge Jonathan Sayward.
