Sarah Scott, née Robinson (1721–1795), was the youngest daughter of Matthew Robinson (1694–1778) and Elizabeth Drake (c.1693–1746). Her older sister, Elizabeth Robinson Montagu (1718–1800), was to become the famous Bluestocking patron and business woman. Sarah was baptized on 5 September 1721 at Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, in York. Her mother Elizabeth Drake was the daughter of Councillor Robert Drake of Cambridge. After his death, her mother, Sarah’s grandmother, married Dr Conyers Middleton (1683–1750), the famous Cambridge scholar and clergyman, in 1710.
