Considered to be one of the finest Anglophone Caribbean poets writing today, Goodison was born and reared in Kingston, Jamaica, which continues to inspire her writing, although she now divides her time between Michigan and Toronto. The eighth of nine children of a lower middle class family, Goodison was educated at St. Hugh’s High School for girls. Following her graduation, she worked as a bookmobile assistant and attended the Jamaica School of Art for a year. She further developed her talents as a painter at the School of the Art Students’ League in New York, from which she graduated in 1969.
