Born in Stepney on 28 November 1926 to Dutch-Jewish immigrant parents, Kops was the youngest of a family of two brothers and four sisters. A dramatist, poet, novelist, journalist, and documentary writer, Kops has written at least 23 stage plays, 12 television plays, 10 novels, and 25 radio plays. Most of the television and radio plays are unpublished. Many of Kops’s works draw upon his personal experiences. His father, a cobbler, immigrated to London from Holland in 1904. Though the family was poor, Kops grew up in a lively, intense, and cosmopolitan setting.
