María Luisa Puga was born in Mexico City in 1944. From a very early age she knew that she wanted to be a writer and an early encounter with the Diary of Anne Frank prompted her to keep a personal diary. In those days it functioned as a replacement for the mother figure that she had tragically lost at the age of nine: “es como si ese diario fuera mi mamá, a la que recurro para acusar al mundo de todas las cosas que me hacen” [it is as though that diary was my mother to whom I resort to blame the world for all the things it does to me] (my own translation) (Urrutia, 2008: 66).
However, in Mexico she did not seem to find the space and language to be the writer she wanted to be and she left …
