Larissa Lai has become a prominent figure in the contemporary Canadian cultural scene due to her innovative production as a writer of fiction and poetry and to her insightful work as a cultural critic and anti-racist activist. The increasing interest in her work led the journal West Coast Line to edit a special issue in 2004 entitled West Coast Lai. Although born in the United States, she migrated to Canada at an early age and is considered a representative Chinese Canadian author of the younger generation; she is now settled in Vancouver, where she is an English professor at the University of British Columbia.
