Though by no means forgotten, the extraordinary life of Henrietta Knight has been eclipsed by those of better known friends and relatives. As the daughter of Henry St. John, Viscount St. John (1652–1742), a descendent of the noble Norman St. John family, and as the half-sister of Henry, first Viscount Bolingbroke (1678–1751), Henrietta entered life with the shadow of greatness cast upon her. She was born on 15 July 1699 in the idyllic environs of Lydiard Tregoze in North Wiltshire, the principal seat of the St. John family, and it was within this setting, and among the company that it afforded, that she was able to realize her proclivity toward the English landscape garden.
