Francesco Chiesa (Sagno 1871 - Lugano 1973) was an important Italian-speaking Swiss writer. He was born in Sagno, in the Canton of Ticino which, along with some of the valleys in the Grigioni Canton, is the only part of Switzerland where the Italian language and culture prevail. Once he had completed his compulsory schooling, he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Pavia, although he changed disciplines almost immediately and graduated in Law in 1894. On returning to Switzerland, he worked as a clerk at the court in Lugano for a few years.
