Bryant was born in Westminster but spent most of his life in Bristol. His parents also originated in Bristol, but moved to London and then Middlesex for a time before moving back in 1761. He had no more than a year of schooling before starting work making and packing tobacco pipes, the family business. Although he suffered from partial deafness and short sightedness, he was a keen musician, as well as an amateur philosopher and astronomer. He spent spells in London working as a labourer and also took to the road as an itinerant seller of the tobacco pipes he produced. When money was short he would sing and entertain to pay his way.
