Grace Nichols, of Guyana, is a major Afro-Caribbean author and a highly respected poet in England, where she has lived since 1977. Her poetry is included on the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) English literature syllabus for the United Kingdom. She is also a popular and prolific children’s author. Her first book of poetry for adults, i is a long-memoried woman, received the Commonwealth Poetry Prize in 1983. Her fourth, Sunris, was awarded the Guyana Poetry Prize in 1996.
