Annie Proulx's first collection of stories, Heart Songs, was published in 1988. Some of the eleven stories that make up this volume had been published in magazines before, while others were new, and even though each story is autonomous what they all have in common is their New England setting. Proulx's later book, The Shipping News, would have the harsh terrain of Newfoundland as its protagonist, and already in Heart Songs we see the author's emphasis on landscape and how it helps shape people's lives. Each story in this collection offers a glimpse into the everyday lives of people in the rural community of Chopping County.
