37 Bridges and Other Stories is the expanded edition of Aamer Hussein’s collection The Swan’s Wife (2014), which signifies a new direction in the author’s work and reflects his engagement with both English and Urdu. As a London-based writer who grew up in Karachi and travels frequently to Pakistan, Hussein has used his fiction to make a voyage between two cultures and languages. While the English language initially influenced the “patterns of [Hussein’s] prose”, his abiding relationship with Urdu – a language that he considers his distant but ever-present “homeland” (Hussein, 2002: 222) – continues to fuel his literary sensibilities.
