Giorgio Scerbanenco, born in Kiyv in 1911, is considered one of Italian Noir’s founding fathers. He was rediscovered in the 1990s thanks to the Giovani Cannibali [Young Cannibals] literary movement which adopted similar narrative strategies and dealt with similar themes, albeit in a much more contemporary Italy.

Scerbanenco’s most famous noir series was set in Milan and published by Garzanti between 1966 and 1969. Venere privata [A Private Venus], is the first novel of the series which finally granted the Ukrainian-born author success and financial serenity as well as longstanding fame and posterity.
